Art4pleasure

Art Classes for Pleasure

 

Run by local artist Mary-Ann Featherstone for adults who enjoy learning new drawing and watercolour techniques. Students develop their own style and use personal interests to inspire them.

 

This class runs on Wednesday's from 10am-1pm, and 1:30pm-3:30pm.

Danse Du Ventre belly dancing classes are suitable for all ages. Classes are designed for you to work at your own pace and most importantly, have fun!

Bereavement 'Knit or Natter'

 

The Martinsey Isle Trust hold an informal Knit and Natter group in the Gallery Cafe on Monday mornings from 10am-12pm. Just knit, just natter - it doesn't really matter which. This is a great chance to meet others in the community and Judith and friends would love to welcome you. This forum offers impartial information, people to listen and a space and place to heard.

The Country market takes place every Monday in the Lower Atrium with a wide variety of seasonal plants, home made cakes and pastries, free range eggs, vegetables, hand-made crafts and much more. Open from 9am-11:30am, pop along and see what goodies are on offer.

The Somerset and Dorset branch of the Family History Society meet monthly at The Exchange and welcome a range of speakers and presenters to address the group. Whether you are an experienced geneologist or just starting to look into your own family history, this group will give you the help and support that you need.

Felt Making Workshop

 

Whether you are a beginner, an improver or an expert there is something for everyone at these monthly workshops. Each session gives felters the time and space to work or their projects with an experienced felter on hand for guidance. Fibres, fabrics and yarns are available to buy during the session and refreshments are included.

The Floral Group

 

Do you love flowers? If the answer is yes, then this is the group for you. Sturminster Newton Floral Group meet every second Wednesday of the month and welcome a whole host of interesting demonstrators. After each presentation there is the opportunity to ask questions and take a closer look at the arrangements. We also hold an annual floral show. Non-members are always welcome to attend the monthly meeting.

The Gardening Club

 

The local gardening club meets on the fourth Wednesday of every month, always with a speaker presenting a fully illustrated talk or demonstration. Again, the gardening club welcome non-memebrs along to their monthly talk and they too hold an annual show in the Stour Hall.

The Learning Centre

 

Sturminster Newton Community Learning Centre can be found in the Lydden room of The Exchange. The Centre is open as a Drop-in every Wednesday from 10am-4pm and again from 7:30pm-9pm. Visitors can use the PCs for their own work, get help with leaning about computers, get help and advice or follow a course on individual topics. There is no charge for using the computers, nor for help and advice. Age Concern Lunch Club

 

The Lunch Club meets every Thursday throughout the year, apart from August. Their own talented cooks produce a variety of menus enjoyed by diners with the meals being served by local volunteers. Transport can be arranged for those living locally.

Paul Hart Art Class

 

Formed by artist and musician Paul Hart in 2007 this group has continued his vision of encouraging local amateur artists of all abilities, to improve and expand their skills and techniques. The group is supported by a qualified tutor, Cath Broadway. Members cover a wide range of media, including oils, water colours, acrylics, beadmaking and patchwork. The group meets on Saturday mornings from 10am to 1pm. They also offer a free taster session providing all materials to people interested in joining.


 

Pilates Classes

The class will be taught at a pace that ensures you are working with the correct technique and hands on correction will be given. The class consists of a warm up, the exercises and a good stretch & cool down. The result is a stronger, lengthened posture & a calm and relaxed mind. The gentle discipline of Pilates challenges for all individuals, regardless of age or fitness. Pilates rehabilitates, builds strength & improves posture, flexibility and balance. It sharpens your coordination and flattens your tummy! With concentration and focus Pilates is relaxing.

Playsongs is a wonderful interactive singing class for babies and toddlers. join them for fun and live music sessions with songs, ryhmes, rhythms and instruments for small hands. Make sure you contact Playsongs first to check space as these classes are really popular. The classes held here cater for children aged from 0-12 months and under 3.

Salsa Cascara


Salsa Cascara run regular six week beginners courses along with their improvers groups and popular social dance session. The group also hold regular workshops and social parties where dancers can practice their moves in a friendly environment. No experience is necessary as the instructors will lead you through step by step. Salsa is a fun and sociable way to keep fit and you don't to bring a partner.

the Brain is a group activity for people with memory loss and their carers. Short Mat Bowling Club


The Sturminster Short Mat Bowling Club bowl all year round and welcome both members and non-members. Monday evening is members night but on a Tuesday afternoon, visitors are welcome to come along and watch or have a go. So why not come along and give this fascinating game a try? The club enters three teams into the Blackmore Vale League and one in the Dorset League, with the season running from September to March.

The U3A is an international movement that encourages retired people to take part in life long learning activities. The Sturminster group hold monthly meetings with a variety of presentation and speakers. The group also host numerous clubs that you can get involved with.
